Critical Materials Technology Accelerator Program
The Critical Materials Technology Accelerator (CMTA) is a national technology commercialization and manufacturing acceleration initiative managed by Centrepolis Accelerator at Lawrence Technological University (LTU) in partnership with the United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR). The Accelerator identifies, evaluates, commercializes, and scales breakthrough technologies that strengthen the United States' critical materials and rare earth element (REE) supply chain — addressing commercial and defense manufacturing needs and U.S. national security priorities.
What we do
At the center of the initiative is the Critical Materials Technology Innovation Challenge — a global technology scouting effort that identifies the world's most promising technologies capable of reducing U.S. dependence on foreign sources of critical materials and enabling resilient domestic manufacturing of components essential to automotive, aerospace, energy, electronics, and defense industries. The Accelerator is focused on technologies that can transition rapidly from laboratory innovation to commercial production, helping establish new U.S. manufacturing capabilities and domestic supply chains.
How we do it
The program is organized around three Innovation Challenge focus areas: Advanced Critical Materials & Rare Earth Processing, Alternative Critical Material Substitution & Material Independence, and End-of-Life Recovery, Recycling & Circular Supply Chains. Selected companies receive funding and commercialization assistance through Centrepolis Accelerator and its national network of partners, including USCAR — including a $100,000 grand prize awarded to one company from the Innovation Challenge, plus support for technology development and pilot projects with USCAR and other customers and strategic partners.
